Warrant Officer Marumo Magane (historically recorded under the surname Muana) is an officer within the South African Police Service (SAPS). He serves as the Commander of the Crime Information Management and Analysis Centre (CIMAC) at the Zonkizizwe Police Station in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng. With nearly three decades of service, Magane’s career has faced heavy public scrutiny due to his involvement in the controversial 2021 Aeroton drug bust and his subsequent, widely publicised testimony before the national Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

  • Commanding Officer: He heads the CIMAC unit at Zonkizizwe Police Station.
  • Primary Mandate: Magane operates primarily in an office-bound analytical capacity. His formal job duties include analyzing localized crime patterns and interviewing suspects arrested for serious offenses. He does not hold a field narcotics or frontline tactical operational mandate.

 

The 2021 Aeroton Drug Bust & Allegations

Magane was thrust into the national spotlight following a massive drug seizure in July 2021.

  • The Operation: He was part of the initial team that responded to an intercepted Scania truck carrying a 715kg consignment of cocaine valued at R300 million. The cargo had traveled from Brazil, through Durban Harbour, to a logistics yard in Gauteng.
  • Arrest: The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) subsequently arrested Magane and two other officials under suspicion of illicit drug dealing and attempting to hijack the container.
  • The “Missing” Drugs: Allegations emerged that officers at the scene planned to steal portions of the haul. Later forensic tracking revealed that 136kg of the seized cocaine went missing from storage.
  • Legal Outcome: Criminal charges against Magane were provisionally withdrawn in 2022 due to prosecutors citing “no prospects of success”. He was also cleared of misconduct via internal SAPS disciplinary processes.

 

2026 Madlanga Commission Testimony

In May 2026, Magane gave heavily publicized, sworn testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria, which investigates law enforcement corruption and drug syndicates. His appearance exposed severe procedural breakdowns:

  • Jurisdictional Breach: Magane admitted to the inquiry panel that conducting the search in Johannesburg fell entirely outside his Ekurhuleni jurisdiction. He failed to notify local police before initiating the raid.
  • Scene Contamination: He admitted to a series of critical blunders, including handling evidence with bare hands without proper forensic gear and loading the drugs directly into a police-issued vehicle. When Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga stated, “You were clueless, and you knew that you were clueless,” Magane replied on record, “That is correct, commissioner.”
  • Theft Accusations: Evidence leader Commissioner Sesi Baloyi openly accused Magane of intentionally planning to divert and steal the drugs. Magane firmly denied the allegation, stating he rejected it “from the bottom of his heart.”
